What Is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Considered an overuse injury, Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) is the most common cause of knee pain in kids between the ages 9 and 14 years. It causes pain a few centimetres below the knee cap.

OSD is a growth related problem, usually affecting athletic youngsters. It usually occurs during a growth spurt where the child grows rapidly in a short span of time. Athletic and active children taking part in sports and other activities like running and jumping are most affected.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease Diagnosis

There are no special tests to diagnose OSD. My Knee Doc will be able to identify if your kid has OSD from the symptoms and after doing a physical examination.

X-rays will not be necessary in most cases. However, My Knee Doc may advise an X-ray of the knee to rule out the presence of any other condition.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of the disease include:

Swelling, tenderness or pain below knee cap

Tenderness after sports or any physical activity

Worsening pain during/after activities like jumping and running

The pain may become worse and as time goes by. The pain subsides when your child stays rested.

Can My Child Continue Doing Sports And Activities?

Yes, a child with OSD can continue doing sports or activities, so long as the pain isn’t very severe and the pain shows improvement after a day’s rest.

Can Osgood-Schlatter Disease Cause Long-term Knee Problems?

No, it does not usually cause any long term knee problems. In some children, the swelling may last even after the pain has subsided.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease Treatment

OSD symptoms typically subside as your child stops growing. This, however, could take anywhere from six to eighteen months.

Any time your child experiences pain; help him/her ease the symptoms by doing the following things:

Give the child a pain-relieving medication. Over-the-counter pills like paracetemol or ibuprofen should work well.

Apply ice on the knee. You could use a bag of ice, a cold gel pack or even a bag of frozen vegetables on the pain area once every couple of hours for 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure to place a thin towel between the ice and the skin.

Once there’s an improvement in pain, My Knee Doc may recommend working with a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will teach your child exercises to help strengthen and stretch the leg muscles.

In rare cases, the knee pain exists even after the child stops growing. If there’s no improvement in your child’s pain, contact My Knee Doc. We will recommend the best possible treatment and course of action. Call 0161 464 6399 Today!
