Before you start

Arthrosamid is a water-based gel injected once into the knee. Unlike other injections it isn't absorbed — it becomes part of the joint lining and stays there, cushioning the joint.

It helps some people a great deal and others not at all. Research has identified fairly clear patterns in who benefits, so a few questions can tell you a lot before you spend money on a consultation.

    What the research actually shows
    Around 6 in 10 people had a worthwhile improvement in pain a year after a single injection, in the published studies.
    For those it helps, the benefit lasts years rather than months — there is follow-up data out to five years, though from small numbers of patients.
    It has not yet been tested against a dummy injection. That's the study that would settle how much of the benefit is the gel itself, and it hasn't been published. I'd rather tell you that than not.
    It treats symptoms — it does not regrow cartilage or stop arthritis progressing. In the UK it is a private treatment, not routinely funded by the NHS.
