How Does Red Light Therapy Aid Recovery?

Rheumatioid arthritis

Low level laser therapy for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis: a metaanalysis In this meta-analysis, red light therapy was found to reduce pain by 70% and morning stiffness by 27.5 minutes for RA patients. 

Chronic pain

Photobiomodulation: Implications for Anesthesia and Pain Relief This review provides strong evidence in neuroscience identifying inhibition of neural function as a mechanism for the clinical application of PBM in pain and anesthesia. 

Low-intensity LASER and LED (photobiomodulation therapy) for pain control of the most common musculoskeletal conditions The results demonstrated a 50% improvement in reported pain scores at treatments 10 and 12. In addition, a significant increase in physical functioning was seen and was maintained through the 30 days follow-up visit. 

The Mechanistic Basis for Photobiomodulation Therapy of Neuropathic Pain by Near Infrared Laser Light These in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that treatment with an irradiance/fluence rate at 270 m W/cm2 or higher at the level of the nerve can rapidly block pain transmission. 

Post-surgery

Osgood Schlatter’s Disease

Tendinopathy

The effects of laser treatment in tendinopathy: a systematic review All studies have shown that application of low intensity laser was better than placebo in improving the factors analyzed in Achilles tendonitis. It also became evident the contribution of an exercise program combined with the laser in the recovery of injuries. 

Cartilage regeneration

Effects of photobiomodulation and a physical exercise program on the expression of inflammatory and cartilage degradation biomarkers and functional capacity in women with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized blinded study Our data suggest that the physical exercise therapy could be a strategy for increasing functional capacity and in association with PBM for increasing IL-10 levels in OA knee individuals.
